Mosaic & Decoupage: The Beauty of Reusing and Recycling
Workshop Series

July 2009 - Youth participate in a two-part workshop series
with Raising Expectations Inc. and presented by mosaic artist,
Jokeeta Joyner, Founder of HarrietGirls, Inc.  These
workshops were held at the Far Southeast Family
Strengthening Collaborative in downtown Anacostia.
Shakere Drum Making Workshops

April 2010 - Raising Expectations Inc. invited percussionist
from Joy of Dance project, Eric Lewis, back to teach Ward 7
and 8 youth how to make Shakere music instruments with
recycled water bottles, beads, and string.  

The youth enjoyed making music with the Shakeres and
learning about the history of where the instrument was
invented in Africa.  
Jewelry Design 101 Workshops

May 2010 - Raising Expectations Inc. hosted a 2nd series of
Jewelry design workshops with jewelry designer and owner of
Flamboyan Designs, Mrs. Danielle "Nikki"
Woodhouse-Johnson.  The girls from Ferebee Hope and the
Washington Highlands neighborhood of Congress Heights,
SE, really enjoyed learning how to make their own wearable
necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings.

Brooch and Pins making Workshops

June 16th & June 17th - Youth learn how to recycle bottle tops,
beads, and buttons with a little felt and hot glue to make their
own pendants with Itari Tikli and Marvenda Scott-Manley, new
R.E. Board Treasurer.
Stop the Violence Youth Art Gallery
& Conflict Resolution Workshops

May - June 2008 - Youth from upper NW schools learned ways
to reduce violence in their homes, schools, and in the streets
by learning conflict resolution strategies with Art Therapist,
Elva Anderson, and Painter, K. Wesley Clark.

Each youth's art work was showcased at Emery Recreation
Center as well as at the Juror's Lounge of the DC Superior
Court during the entire summer of 2008.  Raising
Expectations Inc. hosted a gallery opening reception with
encouraging remarks from Superior Court judges, Emery
recreation center representatives, and project sponsor
representatives of Georgia Avenue Rock Creek East Family
Support Collaborative.

1st Youth Art Mural Project at Upshur Recreation Center

November 14 - 17, 2007 - DCPS youth from Ward 4 recreation
centers and schools participate in mural design
brainstorming sessions and paint their own art mural at
Upshur Recreation Center.  Project was part of a Ward 4
Beautification initiative and included R.E.’s Community Mural
Dedication Ceremony. Special thanks to our sponsors, the
Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners of 4C.  

Ft. Stevens Recreation Center

August 26 - 30, 2008 - Youth from Ward 4 recreation centers in
the  Brightwood neighborhood designed an art mural for Ft.
Stevens Recreation Center as a way of giving back to their
community through creative expression.  After polling the
community, they decided on the message of "Keep our
Brightwood Clean and Green."

The youth artists were assisted by well-known artists, K.
Wesley Clark and Paul Herring, also members of the arts
group AM/Radio Mblishaka.  The community enjoyed live DJ
and dancing at Mural Dedication.  Click on the picture to see

Express Yourself Again" - Youth Poetry Open Mic
April 26, 2007 - Artmosphere Café in Mt. Rainier, MD,
co-hosted youth spoken word/ open mic event with Raising
Expectations Inc. Featured artist included RhymeCipha
WHUR 96.3 FM Radio Station Site Visit
June 21, 2007 - Youth from MentoringWorks2, Inc., were given
a hands-on tour of Howard University’s WHUR 96.3 FM radio
station. They learned about all of WHUR’s studio
departments, such as promotions & marketing, programming,
news, WHUR HD-World, and management.  Youth also had
the opportunity to meet Triscina Grey during her live Midday
show and talk On-Air!
Gee’s Bend – The Architecture of the Quilt  

August 24, 2007 - R.E. organizes a group trip to Baltimore’s Walters
Museum for Quilting Art Exhibit and Documentary on African-American
women quilters from Gee’s Bend, Alabama.  Youth gained
appreciation of community life in the South and innovative creative
expressions of community through quilts.  Trip sponsored by ANC 4C
Mini-Grant.
Hair Art Braiding and Personal Grooming Workshop

July 2008 - Young girls, their mothers, and grandmothers learn how to
care for their hair and properly braid conrows and other styles.  Two
professional hair stylists share hair care secrets and offer helpful
advice to participants.
Meet Wesley Clark, The Artist

January 20, 2007 - Youth learned abstract art techniques in Wesley
Clark's home studio in Hyattsville, Maryland.  

Participants also created their own expressions in a group
masterpiece and "freestyle" drawing exercise.

Lincoln Theatre Tour

January 30, 2007 - Youth from Takoma Park Recreation Center and
Ward 4 schools visit historic Lincoln theatre and learn about the
performing arts.  

They also heard from theatre staff about stage production, lighting,
theatre seating, as well as the history of great African American
performers during Harlem Renaissance.

"Look Here" Photography Art Learning Workshops

November 2008 - Youth learned how to use high-resolution cameras
to take pictures around their communities.  Participants learned about
the importance of composition and lighting in choosing photos.  

They also edited their photographs and learned about various design
techniques with Microsoft's Picture Manager software.
Youth Media Arts Project on Drug Prevention

July - October 2008 - Youth participate in media arts project with Aalia
Group, Inc.  Students learn how to use media equipment from
cameramen and visit local television studio in Arlington, VA.  They
develop their acting skills for youth-designed drug prevention public
service announcements.  
Howard University Sculpture Studio Visit
         
January 2006 - Youth visit  Howard University's Sculpture Studio and
speak with Akili Ron Anderson.  His large wooden sculptures amaze
youth participants and teach them about the legacy of African kings
and queens.
